Installing a Custom Closet System in Your Bedroom: What Should You Consider?

One of my favorite parts of my job as an organizing professional is to see finished products. I enjoy witnessing the transformation that takes place when a cluttered storage space is redesigned into a gorgeous and functional custom closet system. A custom closet should be geared toward the individuals who will be using it, which is why it’s important to really put some thought into creating a custom closet system in your bedroom.

Here are some of the questions to keep in mind when designing a closet for your bedroom:

  • What are your storage needs?
  • What space constraints do you have?
  • What is your personal style?
  • What is your budget?

By considering the answers to these questions, you can help your closet designer come up with the best bedroom storage system possible. Let’s get started by digging into these.

What are Your Storage Needs?

The first step I recommend taking is to look at what you are storing in your bedroom closet. What types of clothes do you wear? Do you work from home and tend to stick to jeans and t-shirts most of the time? Or do you have to dress up in a suit for the office?

Do you play tennis or go hiking on the weekends? Maybe you’re a gardener, and you spend your days off in the dirt wearing clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. How often do you go out for a fancy dinner? Do you have a few pairs of shoes, a few dozen, or hundreds? Maybe you have an extensive collection of purses, or maybe your goal is to wear a tie daily but never twice in a season.

The type of wardrobe you have will influence the types of organizers you want in your custom closet system. For example, if you wear a lot of dresses, you’ll want clothing rods with nothing underneath, so you can hang them. If you mostly wear separates, though, you might want double-hung rods, one under the other, so you can double your hanging space. If you live in t-shirts and leggings 90 percent of the time, drawers and shelves will be more useful than hanging rods.

What Space Constraints Do You Have?

Whether you have a large walk-in closet or a smaller reach-in closet makes a difference, too. While my team is adept at increasing storage space in a small closet, you won’t be able to fit everything in a small space that you would in a large space. Real Simple shares some tips on how to organize a small closet. Of course, if you call me or my design team, we’ll have lots more.

If you’re hoping to build a closet system outside of the space allotted for a closet or if you don’t have a closet built into your bedroom, you’ll need to consider where the windows and doors are, whether the ceiling is sloped, and any other architectural details that can impact the design. My team can build a storage system in any room, but space will be a consideration.

What is Your Personal Style?

One of the most fun parts of designing a custom closet is that you get to incorporate your sense of style into it. My goal is to build a functional and aesthetically-pleasing storage space for each of my clients. When you meet with a designer, they’ll ask you about your style preferences. You’ll also get to choose the finish and hardware you like best, and you can see how they look in 3D.

A custom closet system can be made to appeal to someone with a traditional classic style or someone who prefers a sleek, modern look. We can also help you create something that matches or complements your bedroom decor. The possibilities are endless.

What is Your Budget?

Finally, when designing a custom closet system for your bedroom, you need to consider your budget. At Golden Gate Garage Storage & Closets, we are well-versed in creating systems that can meet many budgetary requirements. The basic rule of thumb is that the larger space you’re organizing and the more closet accessories you choose, the more expensive the design will be. So, this is something to keep in mind if you have a tight budget.

Conclusion

Creating a custom closet system in the bedroom can change the way your bedroom looks and functions. By considering how you plan to use the space, what you’re storing, how much space you have, your sense of personal style, and your budget, you’ll be able to be an active participant in the closet design process.
